Some of the Parts

1.
A Little Alien She’s a little alien to me, Drinks turpentine for tea. She’s a little alien to me, Sitting on my knee. She sits there on my knee Just as slinky as can be… She’s not from round here, I can tell. She’s from some Never Never Land, My little Tinker Bell. She’s a little alien to me, Eyes like an almond. She’s a little alien to me, Her heart is a diamond. She sits there on my knee Just as slinky as can be… She’s not from round here, I can tell. She’s from some Never Never Land, My little Tinker Bell. She’s a little alien to me, She’s got me nonplussed. She’s a little alien to me, She’s got me sussed. She sits there on my knee Just as slinky as can be… She’s not from round here, I can tell. She’s from some Never Never Land, My little Tinker Bell.

Some of the Parts I should have done this 30 years ago. Better late than never, or so they say. It's a long shot, a difficult throw, Yet here I stand ready for the play. My heroes are all in the tomb Save but one solitary soul. Voice cracked and out of tune, But some of the parts make a whole. Poets are the real, true heroes. Voices singing in the wilderness: Words glowing like burning coals That gutter in the emptiness. Phrases tumble into space Tossed upon the tides of thought. But sometimes it’s so hard to face The idea it may come to nought.

How We Burn 05:13
Old Flames Burn Sunday morning, it’s quiet on the street. He grabs a cup of coffee and a bite to eat. Wonders what he’ll do to while away the time, Maybe he’ll take a walk to the Serpentine. Feed the ducks, go walking in the rain, Find himself thinking about her again. How we burn on an old flame! How we burn… How we burn… How we burn on an old flame. She puts on her mascara, fixes her hair, Checks in the mirror to see if she’s still there. Tries to read the papers but it’s all bad news, Wonders what she can do to chase away the blues. Feed the ducks, go walking in the rain, Find herself thinking the same old thoughts again. How we burn on an old flame! How we burn… How we burn… How we burn on an old flame. I look at all the people passing by, Clouds race away in a brooding sky. Down on Speakers’ Corner a beard rants and raves, Telling me about the end of days - So I feed the ducks, go walking in the rain, Find myself thinking about her again. How we burn on an old flame! How we burn… How we burn… How we burn on an old flame.

To The Park 02:40
To the Park I wanna take you to the park, Don’t wanna break your heart Just wanna take you to the park. I know you don’t know me too well But I ain’t ringing no wedding bell – Just wanna take you to the park. You look so fine in your summer dress, A real honey I confess. I heard the man on the radio say, It’s gonna be a nice day today. So I just wanna take you to the park, Have some fun, a bit of a lark. Eat some ice cream in the sun, Maybe feed the ducks on a breadcrumb. I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you to the park. I know you don’t know me too well But I ain’t ringing no wedding bell – Just wanna take you to the park. You look so fine in your summer dress, A real honey I confess. I heard the man on the radio say, It’s gonna be a nice day today. I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you to the park. Eat some ice cream in the sun, Maybe feed the ducks on a breadcrumb. I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you… I just wanna take you to the park.

When the Girls Come Out to Play I took her down to the river I had something I wanted to give her My prize conker on a string You don’t like the girls when you’re only nine You think they’re just a waste of time But then they get under your skin Temptation’s rising It’s a hot sunny day It ain’t surprising When they look that way When the girls come out to play She looked nice but the gasworks was smelly It wasn’t like an ad you see on the telly And mother wants to know where you been We looked in the window and made silly faces Got so high on liquorice laces The girl got under my skin The boys were kicking balls up against a wall But I was Superman, had the cape and all Maybe I was a little thin Sally knocks, ‘Are you coming out to play?’ ‘Gotta have me tea and I’ll be there right away The girl got under my skin Temptation’s rising It’s a hot sunny day It ain’t surprising When they look that way When the girls come out to play I take her down to the river There’s something I wanna give her But it ain’t no diamond ring We go tussling in the tall grass Don’t know if this is really gonna last But the girl’s got under my skin
6.
Pinch of Salt You can take The Daily Mail And burn it in a chimney stack – It’s just beyond the pale When you smell a rat. Help yourself to a pinch of salt And throw it in the Devil’s eyes, Don’t let the man default Or sell you another lie. You’ll only have yourself to blame If you get fooled again. You can take The New York Times And flush it down a pan. Try to read between the lines As best as you can.

about

Some of the Parts is a mixed bag of indie sounds, from the gritty rock of Pinch of Salt, to the more jazzy feel of How We Burn complete with Miles Davis-like trumpet solo. There's a song about aliens (A Little Alien) and a nice and light summer pop song called To The Park. All the songs were recorded with my typical modus operandi – the drums, bass and guitars are recorded live and then there are a few overdubs before mixing. I like to record live because for rock you get a better feel this way. I hope you like it and if you do, you can pay what you like! Rock on...
